Understanding Trauma
By Shannon Newcomb
What is trauma?
A trauma is a deeply distressing or disturbing experience that causes mental and emotional instability for individuals victimized.
What are symptoms of trauma?
The symptoms of a trauma will vary from one individual to another and how each individual responds but the most common symptoms include:
Flashbacks of the traumatic event
Nightmares
Lack of sleep
Physical sensations (pain, swelling, trembling, nausea, etc.)
Panicking
Extreme alertness or feeling constantly “on edge” in caution of another negative event happening
Irritability or flashes of aggressive behavior
Struggles with concentration
Overwhelming feelings of self-blame/guilt, sadness, fear, and/or anger.
Controlling Trauma Rather Than Trauma Controlling You
Processing and walking through the details of a trauma is difficult but essential in the trauma treatment process. You may ask, “how is reliving the event that caused so much pain supposed to help me heal?” It may be hard to believe, but processing through the negative memories and flashbacks and getting to the root of its impact upon the individual helps to make the trauma more manageable.
Trauma therapy in St. Louis, MO can help!
With implementing clinical interventions that include the clients as active participants in the treatment process, trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) and trauma-informed expressive arts therapy, Core Counseling trauma therapists are able to help clients gain a greater sense of stability and control. Our focus is on helping clients face their painful events head on and applying cognitive reframing or “restructuring,” a psychoanalytic approach that takes thoughts, beliefs, and perceptions of the traumatic events and challenges them.
Traumatic events are life occurrences that we never forget but with the proper treatment, guidance, and support provided, stabilization can be achieved.
